Much commentary has been spent on the prospect of pre-election debates between the three party leaders, although I can’t see why Nick Clegg has to be included since he has no prospects of occupying the highest office.

Who should front it seems a question of the moment. Nobody called Dimbleby for a start, and not Paxman either since his mannerisms are distracting. Andrew Neil would be a strong candidate. But I find myself agreeing with Simon Heffer’s suggestion that Terry Wogan is the right man for the job. The irony he brought to the Eurovision Song Contest would be pitch perfect: ‘Get away there, Gordon, do you really mean that?’
