The story of would-be suicide bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab will not be unfamiliar to readers of this blog. While details of his plot have been extensively covered little is known of the network that surrounded and supported him.

As newspapers fill their columns with reviews of 2009 and expectations for 2010, there is usually some harmless pleasure to be had from looking back at last year’s predictions to see how accurate they were. My own modest offering, still available here, was the last piece I wrote for the Daily Telegraph.

A campaign to reform English libel laws will be launched today by two writers’ organisations, Index on Censorship and English PEN.
