Anwar al-Awlaki

CBS News is breaking an exclusive story over in the United States. It seems that Anwar al-Awlaki did indeed direct the abortive Christmas day attack by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. Here’s what CBS are reporting:

The New York Times has reported that al-Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who has been promoted in the UK since 2003, has now admitted that he met with Detroit bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab last fall.

What would you do if you found out that, for the last three years, you were engaged in promoting and supporting an al-Qaeda ideologue with extensive links to the last two terrorist attacks in the United States?  Most people would likely show a bit of humility and “sit the next couple of plays out”.  Not Moazzam Begg however, whose organisation, Cageprisoners, are the UK’s leading promoters of al-Qaeda linked preacher, Anwar al-Awlaki.  Instead, Begg has come out fighting.

At the beginning of January, City University’s The Inquirer ran a strong piece about the continued promotion of al-Qaeda linked cleric Anwar al-Awlaki by the City Islamic Society (ISOC).

Anwar al-Awlaki, the al-Qaeda theoretician with links to three of the 9/11 terrorists and who recently inspired the Fort Hood shooter, Major Nidal Hasan, has allegedly been killed by an American drone attack in Yemen.

On his blog, Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Glasgow Central, Osama Saeed, seems to have taken issue with a pamphlet I wrote last week, which cites his 2006 support for pro al-Qaeda preacher Anwar al-Awlaki.

Over the last few days, my co blogger Shiraz Maher has written a number of blogs about the UK supporters and apologists for pro al-Qaeda preacher Anwar al-Awlaki. Yesterday, I wrote a short pamphlet which includes a comprehensive list of post 9/11 promoters of Anwar al-Awlaki.  Click here for the pdf.

Today we focus on Cage Prisoners which likes to present itself as a human rights organisation campaigning on behalf of Muslim detainees.

The radical American imam, Anwar al-Awalki, whose praise for the Fort Hood gunman, Nidal Hasan, we reported on this blog seems to have gone on the run. Not only did Awlaki declare Hasan a ‘hero’ but it has also emerged that he was in contact with the gunman around 10-20 times before the atrocity itself.

Yesterday this blog revealed the encomium which Anwar al-Awlaki, an American citizen of Yemeni ethnic origin, showered upon Major Nidal Hasan after he murdered 13 US servicemen in Fort Hood. Alwaki is a dangerous al-Qaeda supporter who uses his website to communicate with audiences in the West. He has a number of supporters in Britain. In conjunction with our friends at Harry’s Place and the Spittoon, this blog will be focusing on Awlaki’s British supporters.
